About Missouri in the Crossfire
Preserving Missouri’s Civil War Legacy for Modern Explorers
Missouri in the Crossfire is dedicated to uncovering the untold stories of the Civil War west of the Mississippi. From battlefield landmarks and small-town museums to guerrilla skirmish sites and hidden river crossings, this project exists to bring Missouri’s divided past to life — in a way that is accessible, affordable, and meaningful for today’s history travelers.
Meet Jonathon Midgley
I’m Jonathon Midgley — author, researcher, and battlefield traveler with a passion for telling Missouri’s Civil War story. What began as a single visit to Wilson’s Creek turned into years of research, countless road miles, and the creation of battlefield guides, books, and videos dedicated to this overlooked theater of war.
Rooted in Missouri, I explore the state’s Civil War sites firsthand — walking the ground, reading original sources, and piecing together stories of battles, raids, and divided communities. My goal is simple: to make Missouri’s Civil War history easier to find, understand, and experience — whether you’re planning a trip, teaching a class, or simply curious about the war in the heartland.
Sharing the Story
Through books, blogs, videos, and guides, I share Missouri’s wartime story in ways designed for both casual readers and dedicated history enthusiasts. From quick fact sheets to deep-dive essays, my work aims to preserve memory while encouraging people to visit, explore, and engage with the past where it happened.
